Too steep a hike

IIMs have come up with a 100% fees hike for its Management course from the present Rs 2.5 lacs p.a to Rs 5.5 lacs for the first year & Rs 6 lacs for the second year. Management education comes at a big cost is the message one can draw from the announcement. No doubt, a Management Degree from IIM is a gateway to the best jobs in the industry, but that does not hardely prove the reason for making the course costlier to the consumers. A gradual increase in the course fee would have been the best solution.

IIM is regarded as premier institution in the country as no matter whatever may be the background, rich or poor, a person is found fit to undergo the course if he had got the right grey matter & confidence to step in. With the steep hike of doubling the course fee, the Institute has shattered the dreams of the students of middle/lower middle class background. Eventhough the Institute proclaims that no student found fit would be devoid of opportunity purely due to financial consideration, the sheer monetary burden on students & their parents would weigh down the idea of taking the examination and pursuing the course.

Fees hike by IIM should not be seen in isoloation, as the cascading effect of similar fees hike by IITs & other premier institutes offerring MBA/graduate degree would follow as IIM is a trend setter. As the reason given for the hike was that the present fee structure is not cost effective, it would be a good idea for the IIMs to tax the Corporates as they are the ultimate beneficiaries.

What we are going to see in the future is an unregulated costlier education system from nursery to management schools, wherein the gulf between the haves and have-nots will get widened further.

Bomb is ticking louder & louder

World over everyone is seeing US with their eyes wide open, both culturally & financially. Almost carried away by the maneuvering of the FED by cutting interest rates in US. Amazed at the attempts by FED to bring back the slowing economy & alleviate the credit crunch of the Banks. Let me pen down where i think the problem is.

The term Current Account is used by economies to measure their trade position with other Countries in the World. Simply the excess of their value of exports over imports means the surplus position; excess of imports over exports means deficit position. Short-term current account deficit is not something dangerous but prolonged Current Account deficit plus the Capital Account deficit implies the country is borrowing for its own survival. Estimated U.S. public debt is currently $9 trillion. That's an average debt for 303 million U.S. residents of about $30,000, or for 135 million U.S. taxpayers of about $67,000. (The numbers are about six times bigger if we add unreported U.S. liabilities.)

How does a country borrow?. It can borrow from the Central Bank i.e FED incase of US. Then it means FED should have money left to lend and keep supplying for the deficit. So looking out for Central Banks in other Countries is the only option left for a country like US to meet its deficit. FED prints bonds and sells it to countries like China, India with surplus Forex Reserves. So in a way China, India are lending US to buy their own product/Services or to put it differently we are dependent on US economic performance. I think this is a double edged sword. If US goes to recession & if a Collapse of US Current account deficit happens then countries like China, India will be left with nothing but worthless bond papers; if China, India stop exporting to US due to burgeoning negative trade position, then the US economy will slow down which will in turn have repercussions World over.

Why is US faced with the problem of Fiscal deficit even though it is a Superpower. The undefined motto of the US governments is to increase the consumer spending to keep the economy growing. We could understand this from their policy statements & also the very words FED uses to measure economic growth i.e 'improvement in Consumer spending'. US wants to grow its economy by ensuring its people spend & keep spending. Even if spending is more than what the country could earn. This policy has stemmed from the fact that savings in US is not greatly encouraged, unlike countries like India. In India, for generations we are thought, saving for the future is a virtue. This idea of saving is linked to joint family system of living in India, wherein love, affection & respect for tradition takes over the individual's rights. In countries where an individual's rights are given more importance than to the rules/guidelines for living in a society people tend to lead an ultra morden life stlye.

International Monetary Funds (IMF) concern on the burgeoning trade deficit of US proves this is true. So the time bomb of financial crisis/collapse is ticking in US. We need to take a call, should we keep funding the US for the irresponsible policy of the US state to encourage spending by its people. We can choose to be doomed or be clear of our priorities, which should be to use the surplus Forex Reserves to build infrastructure for our Country. Even though China is investing a lot in US bonds, they are at the same time building massive infrastructure, which we never could imagine. Recent news that a bridge for 36 kms connecting 3 cities in Coastal China is an example in itself. America’s consumer debt bomb is ticking louder and louder in a climate where the artificial depressants to interest rates and debt service are on thinner and thinner ice.

An introspection worth doing. "Are we waiting for the Bomb to explode?"

A New Friend

Met her in my office…

It was a nice incident that ended in meeting the cute innocent looking girl. I suppose, we became friends the same day in our office bus. Did have many things to discuss on the first day and the conversation went well after all, considering she was a loquacious girl. Becoming a friend in no time was a tall order for me, as it usually takes time for me in settling in a relationship. But it was easy going this time as she was so carefree.

In few days, I had a lot of rapport developed with her and was able to discuss more freely most things, which I wouldn’t with a new person. May be, it was more because of her interest to spent time with me!!! . Except for the few occasions were she always tried to irritate me, but failed in most of them (I know she wouldn’t accept this) & my friends (as they envy) trying to pull my leg by making so much fun about me spending time with a new girl, I am happy to have her as my friend. Even though she talks a lot, I enjoyed her company for the few hours we had spent every day.

One thing I always treasure at any time is the company of my friends and would love to recollect how I responded at various times to them. There had been occasions when I felt that, had I been more proactive I could have developed a good friendship. We are given the entire life to live with that we don’t think in the eyes of others visualizing us as a person. I mean, we give more importance to the thinking, what I gain by making a friendship with someone?. I know that it sounds absurd to use a word like “gain”, as friendship is considered to be unselfish feelings for someone. But when we introspect ourselves, we come to terms with reality that most times we make friends with some absurd purpose in mind, unless it is a time pass.

I had promised to myself that I would be a true friend to her and hope i would be able to do it.

New Bike

I had big expectations & titillating mind about the bike i should choose. Choices were more that it was difficult for me to decide whether it is 100 cc or 125 cc or even a 150 cc bike and whether to go for TVS, HH, Bajaj?. Criterias i had in mind were simple

a. Good looks ( any youngster would fantasize)
a. Fuel Efficient ( Most important feature any biker would expect)
b. Maintenance free ( Minimum Maintenance)

My search continued for more than a fortnight.. Visited and got the quotations from all the three bike makers. Read lot of reviews in the net about the bikes. Finally tracked down the bike i need..

All most all the features i had expected were there in that bike. My chooice was Hero Honda "Passion Plus", a 100 cc bike and the best of its class..

1. Looks were great. Even fellow bikers who have Bajaj Discover told me it is good looking and they should have gone for that. It was tall, heavy bike in 100 cc category. Definitely a man's companion.
2. Topped in its class in fuel efficiency, designed to deliver 65 + kms/ litre.
3. I don't think maintenance is an issue in this bike as the built in material were good.

Had a test drive and booked the vehicle the same day...

My first words

Writing for the first time in 'My Ponderings' make me feel happy! Feel like want to write some good message.

I always had this questions in me. Am i making others to speak about me?. We are always happy to hear good things when it is said before us, like you are smart, you are friendly... I feel the real achievement in life would be when people talk good about you when you are away.
